Biography

MIKE FAN is an award-winning Chinese-Canadian operatic baritone, actor, pianist, and educator. Mike is in demand as an engaging and versatile performer and teacher of music, science, math, and languages across Canada and Australia.

Mike’s performances span opera, musical theatre, oratorio, choral music, song, and jazz; concerti, solo, and chamber piano music; and short film and theatre. Mike’s diverse repertoire spans nine languages covering five centuries, including frequent world premieres. Mike has been engaged by the Guelph Symphony Orchestra, Halifax Summer Opera, Vera Causa Opera, Opera NUOVA, and the Canadian Ambassador Choir. Mike speaks fluent English, Mandarin Chinese, French, and growing proficiency in Italian, German, and Spanish. Mike is based in Waterloo and maintains a busy studio of students in KW and Guelph. Mike holds degrees in Voice and Piano Performance as well as Biomedical Science.

Recent opera roles include Top in Copland’s The Tender Land, Don Alvaro in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims, and Dancaïro and Moralès in Bizet’s Carmen. Theatre roles include Snake, Careless, and William in Sheridan’s School for Scandal, Merriman in Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, and Malvolio, Theseus, and Mercutio in Shakespeare plays. Film credits include the documentary In Tune filmed at George Brown College, Sulla in a short film adaptation of Čapek’s R.U.R., and in short films by Steamworld Entertainment and Merridian Films. Mike regularly accompanies as a pianist at OMFA, Kiwanis Festivals, and Royal Conservatory of Music examinations. Concerts include opera in drag for Rainbow Reels and Opera Backwards, opera scenes with Opera for All, and art song recitals for Concerti Fulmini and the Eden Mills Arts Festival.

Mike’s upcoming performance 2019 highlights include Bizet's Carmen with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (Jan 11-12, 2019); Pandolfe in Massenet's Cendrillon directed by Amanda Smith with Opera Laurier, and "Leaving Home", Mike’s HBMus graduation recital from Laurier’s Faculty of Music featuring composers and poets who lived and composed abroad (April 2019).
